            Penang Relay for Life - March 8th and 9th 2008        Fighting Cancer Together

Relay for Life 2008 had more people than ever before, raised more money than ever before, and was wetter than ever before! (and it happened to be Election night!)

We did it!!!!

The programme was as follows:

Saturday

4.00pm   Registration and games

6.00pm   Official Opening Ceremony

6.30pm   First Lap walked by Survivors

                  and then everyone joined in (Relay till 10.00am Sunday)

8.00pm   Luminaria (Lighting) ceremony

8.30pm   Live Entertainment

through the night   Spot Prizes (for those relaying)

Sunday

7.30am   Actual relay race!

8.30am   Aerobics and more games

9.45am   Everyone on track for the last laps

10.00am Closing Ceremony

Some 3,100 people registered for the Relay - meaning we reached our target of 300 teams! And we raised over RM400,000. This is about 33% up on last year, so that is FANTASTIC!!!

We had an amazing Lucky Draw with lots of fabulous prizes. Dell  sponsored two fantastic Inspiron Notebooks, which two lucky winners walked away with ..... Big thanks to Dell......and we had lots of other sponsors who gave hotel vouchers, meal vouchers, toys, things to eat, clocks, and many other surprising and wonderful things. Thank you to all the sponsors. Every ticket got something, instantly .... so happy faces all round!

At 9.50pm on Saturday evening, as part of the live entertainment on the main stage, we had the Miss-Ter Purple Fantasy Pageant. Entrants (male, dressed in purple) wowed the crowd with stunning creativity and personality and won amazing prizes. Fun....fun.....fun .......

Part of Relay is celebrating survivorship. This year more than 100 survivors registered with us, celebrating their fight against cancer. The opening dance was performed by survivors, survivors came from Ipoh and KL, and the first lap was walked by survivors and their families and carers - to huge cheers from everyone else. The stories, the battles, the determination of survivors, tell of great courage and fortitude, and inspire us all.

Courtesy of Jabatan Kesihatan, there was a health screening tent where people got free health screening. For the first time this year, we had a breast check booth. Many thanks to all at Jabatan Kesihatan.

The exhibition tent looked a little wet at times, but there were posters telling people all about cancer, Hospice and Relay. It doubled up as an 'election update service' TV tent and was very popular as a result!

There was lots and lots of food and drink available .... huge amounts! Many thanks to all food suppliers - you did us all proud.
