Relay at PISA

PISA in Penang hosted the 1st National Health and Fitness Expo in December. We were there! The Relay for Life Stall was colourful, poster-full and full of people enquiring about Relay and cancer-related issues. The Governor dropped by - he has opened the Relay event in two of our three years and will do so again this year. Many thanks to our volunteers who manned the stall over the two days, and we look forward to all of you people who visited our stall getting involved in Relay! Let's fight cancer together!

Teams and individuals signing up

This is the time of year when staff at the Relay secretariat in Rumah Hospis are busy registering teams and individuals and ringing hundreds of contacts. Between now and end February we expect some 250 teams to sign up, and you can imagine the hard work being put in by secretariat and volunteers. Lists are compiled and ticked, timelines for the organising of the various facets of the campaign adorn our walls, and two hands and one brain just ain't enough anymore. Roll on Relay, and roll on all you people out there joining in. Give us a call: 2284140.

Talks in full swing

Part of the build-up is of course getting out to schools, colleges, organisations and workplaces and giving talks on Relay and/or cancer-related issues. We have a great response from schools and colleges, and we were also recently at USM, courtesy of the School of Social Sciences, talking to over 700 students. We look forward to many more invitations - if you would like us to come and give a talk/presentation, just give us a call. We are very happy to oblige.

Relay at Little Penang Street Market

Relay for Life 2008 presented the exhibition and had a stall at Little Penang Street Market at the end of November. This is part of bringing Relay into the public domain - via the bright and informative posters, the many leaflets (including "Key Messages of Cancer" in different languages) and the bubbly volunteers! Look out for us at other venues other the next two months ...... and join us!

Wawasan confirm sponsorship

For the second year running, Wawasan Open University have confirmed their sponsorship for around 1,000 Relay for Life T-Shirts. The T-shirts will carry the Relay for Life message on the front, and the Wawasan logo on the back.

Wawasan Open University, based in Penang but covering the whole country, offers innovative and wonderful opportunities for lifelong learning. You can sign up for courses whoever you are. As well as just following an interest, you can also follow Wawasan courses as an alternative route to getting a qualification. Thousands have done it - why don't you? Check their website for more details.

Relay for Life International Training

A two-day training for those involved in organising Relay for Life in Malaysia was held at Hotel Sri Malaysia over the weekend of October 27th and 28th. The training was conducted by facilitators from the American Cancer Society, and was attended by some 40 participants. As well as those from Penang, organisers from the KL Relay for Life event also attended.

The training covered all aspects of Relay for Life. This included its history (it started in the US but has since expanded to some 19 countries worldwide), its mission (to spread awareness about cancer and raise monies for cancer research and services) and the details of its organising. Everyone had a great time and left with an even greater commitment to make Relay for Life a success, in Penang, Kuala Lumpur and (hopefully not too far in the future) in many other states of Malaysia.

Penang Relay for Life 2008 launched at Queensbay Mall

Relay for Life 2008 is up and running! It was officially launched with great fanfare at Queensbay Mall on Saturday October 27th, by YB En Subbaiyah, State Executive Councillor responsible for Health and the Caring Society. The ceremony was given special meaning by the testimonies of cancer survivors, and a celebratory dance was also presented, much to the delight of the crowd.

Throughout the day, an exhibition showing different aspects of cancer and Relay for Life was shown, together with a number of short videos. There was also a health screening table, which was very popular. Leaflets about Relay as well as the Key Messages of Cancer were distributed. Information about how to register for Relay (register a team of 10, contact us now!) was available, and the Relay for Life 2008 team will be visiting many other venues between now and March. We can come to you too .... just let us know when you want us.... !

Many thanks to all the survivors, contributors and volunteers who made the launch memorable. And the message of the launch:

"Let's make Relay for Life 2008 another memorable, community-based campaign to raise awareness about cancer and raise funds for much needed cancer services. Relay for Life 2008 - Fighting Cancer Together. Let's do it - together!"

Join us

Teams are the life-blood of Relay for Life. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to form a team, of 10 people, to participate both in the campaign and in the actual Relay event.

Once you register, all team members get a Relay kit which includes a fantastic T-Shirt, information about the vent, some give-aways and a donation card.

Members are asked to help raise money and help spread the key messages about cancer. Holding special fund-raising events or hosting our exhibition or a talk are also encouraged.

Cards must be returned by February 29th, and then all teams join in the fun-filled Relay event in Taman Perbandaran (Youth Park), on March 8th and 9th 2008. See you there!
