The Relay Final Event, 1st and 2nd October 2011
The culmination of Relay for Life will take place in October, in Taman Perbandaran (Penang's Youth Park.
It is a fantastic event!
It lasts for 16 hours, from around 6.00pm on Saturday evening to 10.00am on Sunday morning. Teams 'relay' round the track throughout this time (team members can take it in turns) to symbolise the on-going fight against cancer and also to symbolise the battle of a cancer patient fonce diagnosed ... a long struggle but which people face with fantastic courage and of course with hope.
There are special ceremonies during this time. And the whole event is conducted in a carnival-like atmosphere, with games, entertainment, food, spot prizes, and an assortment of other activities to keep participants and their families happy.
The various special moments and activities include:
The Chief Minister of Penang will open the event, complete with special dances and presentations to open the event - it's a carnival!
The first lap is walked by survivors, with their family, friends and carers. Celebrating survivorship is a key theme of Relay!
This special ceremony, held between 8.00pm and 8.30pm, commemorates loved ones who have struggled against cancer. Candles are lit all around the track, and people are welcome to buy a bag, personalise it, and join in the remembrance ceremony. We ask others to respect this time, by being silent and stopping walking.
We always have a great line-up of live entertainment - see the green thing to your right for the 2010 programme for the Variety Show! We will thrill you while you Relay!
Lots of games are organised for people to join. And lots of wonderful prizes to be won.
Plus lots of other things, like HENNA PAINTING AND DECORATING CUP CAKES are there too. And teams may organise lots of things - if you have something, let us know!

Survivorship The first lap is always walked by cancer survivors and their families and carers. For Relay purposes, a survivor is anyone who is living with cancer. In one Relay, a woman took part who had just been diagnosed with cancer - the same day. She is a survivor!
