            Penang Relay for Life 2009        Fighting Cancer Together

That's was the verdict on the fifth Relay for Life's overnight celebrations at Penang's Youth Park on March 14th and 15th.

Some 3,000 people came together in our fight against cancer. We relayed round a track for 16 hours non-stop, symbolising the on-going fight against cancer.

And there was some wonderful entertainment, games, activities, food, exhibitions and health screenings.

Thanks to YAB Lim Guan Eng, Penang's Chief Minister, for opening our event and flagging off the first lap, walked by nearly 100 survivors.

Thanks to everyone who participated; teams, sponsors, individuals, volunteers, entertainers, clowns, the secretariat and the committee: everyone helped make the event memorable, fun and successful. The two main aims were and are to raise awareness about the key messages of cancer and to raise much needed funds for cancer services in Penang.

And many, many thanks to YB Phee Boon Poh, State Executive Councillor for Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment, who gave a rousing and moving closing statement.

One key message of that closing ceremony is that the Relay does not end here. We need to take the key messages of cancer to every corner of Penang and the northern region of Malaysia. The messages are messages of hope and of practical advice for making sure that as many people as possible avoid or survive cancer. There is a lot we can do.
